An examination of identity, change, time, and the struggle to find oneself, seen through the lens of a community centre acting class in Shirley, Vermont. The play follows five characters through six weeks of classes: Marty, a not-quite-so-former Hippie, leads the acting class while her husband James attends in support; Schulz, a local carpenter, and Theresa, a former actress from New York City, strike up an immediate connection; young teen Lauren just wants to learn how to land the lead role of her high school play. The play deftly illustrates their growing and shifting relationships, balancing comedic physical moments with nuanced emotional resonance.
The lighting design for the show focused on capturing the feeling of normality and realism. Subtle shifts from afternoon sun to dimmed incandescent lights to bright fluorescents tracked the passage of time and matched the moods of the scenes. |
