A Grand Night for Singing
Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Book by Walter Bobbie Thingamajig Theatre Company, 2019 Director/Choreographer: Andrew Barratt Lewis Music Director: Paula Millar Set + Props Designer: Laura Moore Costume Designer: Adrienne Young Lighting Designer: Elaine Wong Production Stage Manager: Hunter Swinehart Photography by Jeff Laydon. This production was performed in repertory with a shared lighting plot with one other production, A Very Perry Christmas. A musical revue that celebrates the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein, A Grand Night for Singing is a light-hearted, warm piece that utilizes a small, flexible cast to showcase some of the famous duo's most popular songs.
The production featured a very minimal set design, so one of the major goals of the lighting design was to provide the atmosphere and environment for the thirty different musical numbers. Colour and pattern were used to establish romantic nights and soft mornings, the depth of loneliness and the rollercoaster of parenthood, as well as the vibrancy of the jazzier, uptempo numbers. A handmade star drop and some incandescent string lights added that final touch of warmth and magic. |
